Canada gets another shot at Olympics Good news for the Canadian national team meant bad news for Chastity Clapp - her husband, Stubby, has reason to keep playing baseball. Driven by a veteran core that first made a name for itself at the 1999 Pan American Games, Canada kept its hopes of playing at the 2008 Beijing Games alive by finishing fourth at the Americas Olympic qualifier and advancing to a second-chance qualifying tournament. Clapp, an infielder from Windsor, Ont., who has become a baseball folk hero in this country, would have retired had the national team not advanced. Instead, the

In the two years since forming the South Florida Mustangs travel baseball program, manager Gary Bussey has watched the squad rapidly grow into one of the area's most competitive. This summer, the Mustangs have again been among the best in the state. The squad, competing as the Lake Worth Mustangs during the Pony League season, recently earned a second-place finish in the Pony League 11-and-under state tournament. The Mustangs won the district tournament in early June and are currently playing in the Amateur Athletic Union national tournament, which began Friday in Orlando. "I feel the team's performance was outstanding in districts," Bussey said.

South Africa skipper OK as underdog

South Africa skipper OK as underdog As the manager of what he expects to be a severely undermanned South African team at the inaugural World Baseball Classic this spring, Rick Magnante is well aware of the long odds against his club getting out of a tough Pool B that features the United States, Canada and Mexico. "My God," Magnante said in a phone interview with MLB.com on Wednesday. "We're going to be like the Lilliputians out there." But don't waste any time feeling sorry for Magnante, a longtime scout for the Oakland A's. Or for his players. Win, lose or mercy-ruled
