Business at arsenal ‘adopts’ service people in Middle East

Filed under:

Rosie Williamson knows what it’s like for someone serving in the military to get packages from home.

But today she is on the sending, rather than the receiving, end.

Williamson spent 20 years in the Air Force before coming to work in 2000 at the U.S. Army Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Enterprise Systems and Services facility on the Radford Army Ammunition Plant grounds.

When Lt. Col. Fernando Torrent took command of ALTESS about three years ago, he wanted to start a program in which the agency would support, every month or so, a different soldier serving in Afghanistan or Iraq with goods useful in those places.

Torrent brought the idea to Williamson’s boss, Jimmy Reynolds, who is ALTESS’ resource management division chief, looking for someone to make it happen.

Reynolds recalls that his reaction was immediate.

“I’ve got the person for you, just knowing her background,” he said.
