Mozambique aims for “low density” tourism

Filed under:

Mozambique hopes to receive more tourists, but the southern African country still aims for “low density” tourism to prevent pressure on natural resources, Tourism Minister Fernando Sumbana has said.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting on Monday with the media in the district of Namaacha, on the border with Swaziland, in a ceremony to launch the week of commemorations of World Tourism Day, to be celebrated on September 27.

He noted that an increase in the number of tourists is important because the revenue tourism brings in will improve the quality of life of the Mozambicans, but this must not be done at the cost of sustainable activity in environmental terms.

According to local media reports, Mozambique is currently receiving an average of 700,000 tourists a year and the figure is expected to increase to about four million in the near future.

“So far, Mozambique has been exploiting only about 50 percent of its potential in the area. Our aim should not be mass tourism, but one of quality and low density,” said Sumbana.
