Most refugees on Nauru to come to Australia

Filed under:

The Federal Government has announced that all but two of the asylum seekers being held in detention on the island of Nauru will now be brought to Australia within days.

The Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says 13 of those coming back to Australia have been found to be refugees and will be able to live in the community on their return.

But while it’s welcome news for those who are leaving, two asylum seekers remain on Nauru and the news has compounded their feelings of frustration and isolation.

And while the Government says it will not close off what it’s called its ‘Pacific Solution’ just yet, the Labor Party is today demanding that the detention centre on Nauru be closed once and for all.

This report from Lynn Bell.

LYNN BELL: For four years, the 25 asylum seekers who’ve been in detention on the island of Nauru, have waited for this news.

Their migration agent, Marian Lay, says they’re elated that they’ve now been granted permission to come to Australia.

MARIAN LAY: It was very, very good news. When I heard last night that they would all be coming to Australia I really was quite overwhelmed. It’s been a long time coming and they’ve suffered a great deal while they’ve been kept in limbo.

LYNN BELL: She says eight Afghans and five Iraqis have been declared refugees and will arrive with temporary protection visas. The others will come with transitory visas so their cases can be processed on shore.

Of the 27 currently in the camp, 13 will soon fly to freedom in Australia after being granted refugee status. Another 12 will be kept in custody in camps around Australia until their cases are resolved, reports the BBC. Australian officials said the last two in the camp are considered security

Australia ’responsible’ for climate change refugees

Australia 'responsible' for climate change refugees An Australian environmental group has welcomed an Opposition proposal for the nation to accept climate change refugees but says it does not go far enough. Labor has suggested Australia offer refuge to Pacific islanders if their countries are flooded by rising sea levels, but the Federal Environment Minister, Ian Campbell, says Australia is already providing scientific help. Erwin Jackson from the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) says it would be unfair if Australia did not accept climate change refugees. "Australians on average have contributed six times as much to the greenhouse problem than all the people in all the

GAZA WITHDRAWAL REPRESENTS GREAT OPPORTUNITY, SAYS UN

Following Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, the head of the main United Nations agency helping Palestinian refugees says her main focus is on creating jobs, micro-financing and housing reconstruction so that the inhabitants themselves can benefit from the pullback. Karen Koning AbuZayd, commissioner-general of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said the agency will work within the framework of James Wolfensohn, envoy of the Middle East Quartet for coordinating Israel's withdrawal from Gaza and the economic and social transition there. "We are very keen, along with the Wolfensohn team, to make sure

End food cuts for Africa’s refugees, urge UNHCR and WFP

Cuts in food rations in Africa's refugee camps are threatening the health, nutrition and social stability of hundreds of thousands of refugees, warned the UN refugee agency and the World Food Programme today as they appealed for more funds to feed the refugees. The two UN agencies work together to provide essential food for 2 million refugees in the developing world, but funding shortages have forced them to reduce rations. WFP urgently needs US$219 million for its refugee-related operations until the end of this year. UNHCR – tasked with providing protection, assistance and complementary food and non-food relief items –
