INDON TRAVEL WARNING UPDATED

Australia has updated its travel warning for Indonesia for the second time in a week, after Indonesian police warned that militants are at an advanced stage of planning attacks against Western targets.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) renewed a warning that advises Australians against all non-essential travel to Indonesia.

“We continue to receive a stream of credible reporting suggesting that terrorists are in the very advanced stages of planning attacks in Indonesia,” the DFAT travel warning said.

“Attacks could occur at any time, anywhere in Indonesia and could be directed at any locations known to be frequented by foreigners,” it said.

The advisory said recent credible evidence suggests international hotels frequented by Westerners in Jakarta may be targeted, as well as embassies, international schools, office buildings and shopping malls.

The department is advising Australians in Indonesia who are concerned for their safety to consider departing, and anyone remaining in the country to exercise caution.

Australians have for some time been warned to avoid travel to Aceh and Maluku, particularly the capital Ambon, with reports that attacks may be being planned against foreigners involved in the Aceh tsunami relief effort.

The updated warning came just hours after Indonesian police said there have been increased communications among militants wanted for a string of deadly attacks, indicating they were planning fresh strikes.
