Official says Dover has “huge” tourism potential

The city has all the ingredients of a great tourist destination _ the only thing left is for the community to publicize it, according to a state tourism official.

“The challenge is to get the word out,” Margaret Joyce, assistant director of the state Division of Travel and Tourism Development, told the Dover Tourism Forum, a business group, on Friday. “You have to work together. That’s why the venue such as this is extremely important.”

Promoting the city as a destination has been a major goal for Dover’s business community in recent years, as the Amtrak Downeaster began to bring people into Dover and a number of new restaurants opened downtown.

City officials and members of a task force working on the development of a 35-acre municipally owned downtown waterfront district also are hoping the project will help bring more visitors to Dover.
