Air NZ to compete with travel agents on new-look website

Air NZ to compete with travel agents on new-look website

Air NZ, with all other airlines, has spent the past few years encouraging customers to book flights on its website, avoiding travel agents altogether.

Now it wants them to book their whole holiday online.

This move, described by Air NZ as a market first for the country, will heighten competition with travel agents - many of whom have moved away from selling low-margin airfares into the more profitable area of holiday packages.

Air NZ global direct sales general manager Chris Hunter said online customers had been demanding more from the airline’s website than just a plane ticket.

A big focus of the site was the in-bound travel market, with overseas visitors using it to book accommodation and other parts of their holiday, such as rental cars.

House of Travel commercial director Tony Moffatt said although he expected it, he was still surprised Air NZ was heading down this path.

“Around the world, airlines have been spectacularly unsuccessful at delivering anything more than the airline experience,” he said.

Travel agents holding their own against the Internet

Travel agents have proven to be far more resilient than they've been given credit for. They've survived airlines cutting their commissions. They've weathered wars, SARS and economic downturns. And it appears they're holding their own against the biggest threat of all: the Internet. With consumers booking their own travel online, conventional wisdom held the traditional travel agent was doomed to extinction. The inroads made by big booking sites such as Expedia or Travelocity were surely the last straw. But a study released this week shows the majority of Canadians trust their travel agent over their computer. According to the Online Travel study by TNS Canadian

Tour operator Budget Travel has announced it will cease taking bookings via independent travel agents from December. The company will concentrate instead on dealing directly with its customers via its 40 Budget Travel shops, its call centre and its website. Budget Travel accounts for an estimated 40% of the package holiday market in Ireland. In 2004 it carried approximately 400,000 people from Ireland to holidays across Europe, the Caribbean and America. Turnover at the company is in excess of €200m.
