Ontario Government Strengthens Cultural Tourism

The Ontario government is helping to build cultural tourism by supporting the 30th anniversary of the London Regional Children’s Museum and an expansion of Doors Open London, Minister of Culture Madeleine Meilleur announced today, together with Chris Bentley, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Khalil Ramal, MPP for London-Fanshawe and Deb Matthews, MPP for London North Centre.

“Arts and culture matter, and our government understands the vital role they play in our communities,” said Meilleur. “By building audiences for cultural attractions in London, we will help strengthen cultural
organizations, tourism and the economy, and provide the people of Ontario with
a quality of life that is second to none.”

The London Regional Children’s Museum will receive $100,000 through the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund (OCAF) for “The Big 3-0,” a six-month series of celebrations and programs centred on the museum’s 30th anniversary. The museum will use the funding for activities including an exhibition ofcollected works from Alan Benninger, which features 129 tin toys representing different themes and time periods. The funding will also support “Around the World in 99 Days” a program that consists of 99 consecutive days of educational, hands-on activities, and encourages visitors to experience science, heritage and the arts of countries worldwide. It marks the first time the museum has offered a special exhibition during the summer months. These programs are projected to increase attendance by approximately 19,000 visitors this year.

Vegas casino firms making the most of Macau ties

Maybe, like me, you were a little curious about why the government of Macau chose to showcase its cultural heritage in Las Vegas this week instead of going to a bigger media market such as New York or an American city with a huge Chinese population, such as San Francisco. Macau Week in Las Vegas turned out to be an enjoyable experience for most of the people I talked to. But why come to Las Vegas, a city filled with people who would most likely want to get away from a city that has casinos when they go on vacation? If you

Ottawa delegatation wooing Chinese tourism

Tourism operators in Ottawa will likely find themselves hosting as many as 400,000 Chinese visitors a year by 2007 if the Chinese government grants Canada tourist approval status. Tourism officials throughout Ontario are confident the federal government will successfully negotiate a deal with China that will see Canada placed on China's approved destination leisure travel list for its citizens. With negotiations still underway between the Chinese government and the Canadian federal government, approval is expected to take place this fall, during a state visit by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, according to Jacques Burelle, president of the Ottawa Tourism and Convention

Zimbabwe evictions a pointer to Africa’s chaotic urban growth, says Habitat

In May, with little or no warning, the government of Zimbabwe embarked on an operation to "clean up" its cities. "Operation Murambatsvina," or Operation Restore Order, started in the capital Harare, and rapidly evolved into a nationwide demolition and eviction campaign carried out by the police and the army. Popularly known as "Operation Tsunami" because of its speed and ferocity, it resulted in the destruction of homes, business premises and vending sites in several parts of the country. A July report by the UN Special Envoy on Human Settlements, Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, estimates that some 700,000 people in cities across
