Travel agencies help Lawrencians eager to outrun Hurricane Emily

Travel agencies scrambled to get Lawrence residents out of Mexico over the weekend before Hurricane Emily hit the Yucatan Peninsula.

“They called on Friday and screamed to come home,” said Joan Myers, a travel consultant with Carlson Wagonlit Travel/Sunflower Travel Service. “Everybody’s home safe and sound.”

The worst damage on the Yucatan Peninsula was in Puerto Aventuras, where the storm’s eye came ashore some 60 miles south of the tourist resort of Cancun and in Tulum, a collection of thatched hut hotels along a secluded strip of beach that is popular with backpackers.

The storm also wreaked havoc with vacation schedules.

Travel agencies across Taiwan Straits team up to tap business opportunities

Fifty travel agencies across the Taiwan Straits gathered in Fuzhou City of east China's Fujian Province on Monday to discuss cross-Straits tourism. There is surging demand from mainland residents to tour the island of Taiwan. Adelman Travel Group ranks 8th in industry survey

The New York-based publication ranks corporate-owned travel agencies based on data gathered from Airlines Reporting Corp., including ticket transactions and sales activity. The agencies then are ranked by the amount of overall activity and percentage of tickets purchased for domestic travel, among other factors. Founded in 1985, Adelman Travel operates corporate travel management, vacations, and meetings and incentives divisions and has reservations centers in Milwaukee; Boston; Hartford and Ansonia, Conn.; and in Irvine, California. Transat A. T. Inc. acquires control of Travel Superstore Inc.

Tourism operator Transat A.T. Inc. has bought control of Travel Superstore Inc., a Hamilton company that operates 10 travel agencies and a travel Web site called tripcentral.ca. The Montreal company said Tuesday it made the acquisition thrrough its wholly owned subsidiary, Consultour Inc. Financial terms of the deal were not revealed. Consultour operates travel agencies and franchises, with more than 200 sales outlets in Canada. Transat A.T. (TSX:TRZ.B) owns a charter airline, travel agencies and tour companies in Canada and France. World Travel Fair to Open June 2

A travel fair will present tour programs and information to ordinary citizens and those engaged in the travel industry both at home and abroad. The Korea Tourism Association will hold the 18th Korea World Travel Fair (KOTFA 2005) June 2-5 at COEX in southern Seoul under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Seoul City, the Korea National Tourism Organization and Korean Air.
