Europe Roundup: Equities advance

European stock markets advanced yesterday, with the London FTSE 100 index rising 0.96 per cent to close at 5,930.10 points.

In Paris the CAC 40 rose 0.45 per cent to finish at 5,243.10 while in Frankfurt the DAX added 0.49 per cent to reach 5,989.71 points. The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index closed unofficially up 0.5 per cent at 1,395.8 points.

European shares nudged closer to five-year highs yesterday, buoyed by Spanish utilities and retailers as flurry of takeover activity centred on the sector, while mining stocks provided support.

Ryanair takes Dublin Terminal 2 challenge to Europe

Low-cost airline Ryanair will submit a complaint to the European Commission against Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) over its plans to build a second terminal, the carrier said on Tuesday.

Ryanair has long sought a second terminal at Dublin airport, to be run by the airline or another independent operator rather than the DAA.

Europes leading budget carrier says it wants to keep a lid on the cost of the development, which it says could drive up passenger charges by as much as 60 percent.

Bear Stearns names Peretie as Europe CEO

Bear Stearns Cos. Inc. (BSC) Monday named Michel Peretie to the new role of chief executive of the banks activities in Europe, adding to his post as chairman of its London-based unit, Bear Stearns International Ltd.

The move comes as Bear Stearns boosts its presence in Europe in areas such as mortgage lending and packaging, equity sales-trading and prime brokerage.

Since 2003, the banking group has added about 300 people to its London office and last month said it would move to a new European headquarters being built in Londons Canary Wharf for completion in 2009.

IT was a team win but one mans triumph. The happiness and heartache of Hole 16 will go down in Ryder Cup history as the moment that sank hard men swifter than the best can sink a birdie.

Darren Clarke, who lost his 39-year-old wife Heather to breast cancer just last month, had putted to win his third match of three, a crowd of thousands had erupted in olé, olé, olé and there was a sea of arms raised in victory and outstretched in embraces.

Clarke walked into the open arms of his father, received a bear-hug from Tiger Woods, was taken over by his caddie and finally collapsed on to the shoulder of his captain and let the tears fall. It didnt matter that Europe had already run away with the tournament.

European captain Ian Woosnam said he may again use all 12 players on the second day of the Ryder Cup after yesterday watching each of them contribute to a two-point lead over the U.S.

Well see how it goes in the morning but it could go that way again, Woosnam told reporters at Irelands K Club. Were so strong from top to bottom its unbelievable.

Woosnams counterpart, Tom Lehman, decided against giving rookie Vaughn Taylor his first tryout in todays four-balls, while Scott Verplank, one of his two picks, will compete for the first time. Europes golfers, targeting an unprecedented third straight win in the sports premier team event, lead 5-3.
